Working Together to Address Opioid Addiction
Prescription drug abuse affects our communities and our lives with social, emotional, financial, professional, physical, cognitive, and environmental implications. On February 21, 2017 at 11:30— 2:30 PM CST, this webinar will explore the roles of individuals and organizations in health or human services settings in curbing opioid abuse. The webinar will be led by Renata J. Henry, MEd, the Executive Director of the Danya Institute. Dr. Henry has more than 35 years of experience in behavioral health, serving in leadership positions in mental health and substance abuse prevention, as well as in state and county government.
Opioid Prescribing: Changing Practice, Saving Lives
Although U.S. patients have not reported an increase in the amount of pain they feel, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the U.S. has quadrupled in the past 15 years. On February 28, 2017 at 11:00—2:00 PM CST, this webinar will incorporate the FDA blueprint for safe opioid prescribing. The webinar will be led by Yngvild Olsen, MD, MPH, Medical Director for the Institutes for Behavior Resources Inc. in Maryland. Dr. Olsen will describe techniques for counseling patients and caregivers about the safe use of opioids, strategies for diagnosing and managing opioid-addicted patients, and techniques for safe opioid prescribing.

Vulnerable Populations in Health Care and Health Research
How do nuanced external factors contribute to vulnerability in population health? And how can public health professionals work with communities to understand and address vulnerabilities? In a new hour-long online course from the Northwest Public Health Training Center, co-instructors Lonnie Nelson, PhD, and Brian Bresnahan, PhD, from the University of Washington’s Patient Centered Outcomes Research Partnership (PCORP) offer an evidence-based and effective framework for working with vulnerable populations.
So Much at Stake: Lessons on Stakeholder Engagement from the Washington State Suicide Prevention Plan
In 2016, Washington State launched a new state-wide suicide prevention plan. The plan grew out of a process that involved wide-scale stakeholder involvement and engagement. In this one-hour archived Hot Topics webinar, Karyn Brownson, MSW, State Suicide Prevention Plan Manager from Washington State Department of Health discusses the research on how suicide impacts various regions and populations, and describes the broad strategies for stakeholder engagement that went into plan development. These strategies are applicable to many other types of projects that would benefit from large-scale community engagement.
