This installment of our PHLN Training Highlights brings us a three-part course on ArcGIS, using informatics to inform data practices, and harnessing critical consciousness for behavior change interventions for racial and sexual minority communities, and an overview of influenza and related pandemics.

GIS Part I: Getting Started with ArcGIS

Join Region III in Philadelphia, on March 3 2017, at 9AM ET for the first in a three-part series designed to teach new users how to create basic maps using ArcGIS software  (explain what this is in a short phrase) and explore spatial data for Philadelphia. The training course will be taught by Steven Melly, MS, who is a Geographic Information System Analyst for the Urban Health Collaborative at Dornsife School of Public Health, Drexel University.

Using Informatics to Gather Health Data

This recorded webinar will introduce concepts in informatics and discuss their potential for empowering the use of data. Dr. Gabriela Marcu is an Assistant Professor at the College of Computing and Informatics and a Research Fellow with the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute at Drexel University. She will share strategies and innovative approaches for gathering data to monitor and evaluate outcomes, support grant applications, and facilitate data usage in strategic planning. Dr. Marcu will describe some of her recent collaborations with public health researchers, clinical practitioners, community partners, and universities. She will also share a breadth of examples and resources to illustrate how mHealth, apps, database management, and other technologies are increasingly utilized in public health practice.

Critical Consciousness-based Health Promotion Interventions for Racial and Sexual Minority Populations

The term “critical consciousness”  describes the process through which individuals become aware of the broader social, political, and cultural forces that perpetuate oppression and inequality. Helping to raise individuals’ awareness and recognition of such forces in their daily lives can fuel empowerment, self-esteem, and other precursors to positive health behavior change. In this webinar, Dr. Patrick Wilson will discuss how critical consciousness can be used to support behavior change interventions for marginalized groups, such as young black men who have sex with men.

In this archived webinar, Dr. Peter Wenger from the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at St. Peter’s University Hospital provides an historic overview of influenza ad the cause of three pandemics, and their global impact. Dr. Wenger also highlights the many common influenza strains, the manufacturing process of vaccines and the challenges it presents, and the current recommendations for influenza immunizations.
