About the National Program Office for PHSSR Annual Solicitation
Working in collaboration with Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the National Coordinating Center for PHSSR (Coordinating Center) at the University of Kentucky, NNPHI’s goal was to expand the evidence base for effective public health policy and practice through investment in PHSSR. Our role emphasized:
- Developing, disseminating, and facilitating an annual solicitation and review process for PHSSR grants;
- Managing awarded grants;
- Expanding the evidence base of PHSSR; and,
- Growing the community of PHSSR researchers.
Our Work
Between 2009 and 2014, we facilitated an annual solicitation for RWJF’s PHSSR grant-making program and served as a National Program Office for the last two years of the program. In close partnership, NNPHI, RWJF, and Coordinating Center worked to establish research focus areas at the intersection of cutting-edge PHSSR and population health priorities.
These priorities included the national research agenda for PHSSR, implementation of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, the National Prevention Strategy, recent Institute of Medicine Reports and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Winnable Battles.
Further Work: Advancing Public Health Services and Systems Research (PHSSR) among Practitioners
Building on the existing relationship between NNPHI and the Coordinating Center at the University of Kentucky, NNPHI and our member institute Health Resources in Action have teamed up to support the PHSSR Translational Toolbox Initiative to translate empirical research findings to inform and guide decision-making and action by public health policy and practice stakeholders.
NNPHI and HRiA are collaborating with the Coordinating Center, PHSSR grantees, and national public health partner organizations to develop and disseminate innovative translation products, such as decision-making tools, web-based applications, and/or calculators, designed for public health practitioners.
