Southwest Regional Health Equity Council Blueprint for Action on Health Equity

April 11, 2017

The Southwest Regional Health Equity Council (Region 6, SWRHEC) launched Blueprint: Call to Action in April 2016. The Blueprint includes a compilation of regional data addressing health outcomes and burdens along with data from select social, behavioral and environmental determinants of health that also affect health equity.

Key findings described in the Blueprint include the following:

  • Arkansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas are among the U.S. states with the highest percentages of households with food insecurity
  • The populations most likely to experience low health literacy are more likely to include older adults, racial and ethnic minorities, people with less than a high school degree or GED certificate, people with low-income levels, non-native speakers of English, and people with compromised health status
  • Hispanic and/or Latinx workers have the lowest median hourly wages in the region, earning $5-$9 less than white workers in all the states in the region
  • The greatest percentage of African-Americans living in high-poverty neighborhoods in 2000 was found in Louisiana
  • In the five states within Region 6, renters had housing costs above 30% of household income with a much greater frequency than did homeowners
