About OPEN, Inc.
OPEN, Inc. is establishing itself as a 501c3 organization designed to catalyze systemic change to create a more equitable nation. OPEN, Inc.’s primary function is to provide backbone support to a national network taking on America’s oral health challenges so that everyone has an equitable chance to thrive.
Our mission is to ignite change and build collective power to transform individuals, communities, and systems.
Our vision is that oral health is integrated into overall health, and health care is equitable, accessible, and affordable for all.
The Oral Health Progress and Equity Network (OPEN) is supported and managed by OPEN, Inc. along with a network infrastructure that embraces members from all levels of the network and is responsible for seeking out new members and for cultivating the network. This is accomplished through a range of activities such as: keeping members informed of network activities and progress, weaving existing members together, providing technical assistance and resources, and responding to emergent needs. Members stay personally and virtually connected through a system of continuous communication, which includes the use of an online, collaborative platform, in-person and virtual meetings (at local, state, regional, and national levels) and other frequent interactions to build and strengthen authentic relationships. Network activities are driven by members, and because of this collective empowerment, individual network members are better equipped to create large scale change. Individually, we can make progress; together we transform the nation.
Over the last decade, the Oral Health Progress and Equity Network (OPEN) has emerged from a nationwide conversation among policymakers, providers, public health activists, and grassroots organizers who acknowledge that the system of healthcare we have in place today is not working for people’s overall health and well-being, and that it’s time to work together to build a new reality. The network enables advocates to come together to create the changes needed to advance our shared oral health goals and work towards specific, measurable targets including:
- Eradicate dental disease in children
- Build a comprehensive national oral health measurement system
- Integrate oral health into person-centered health homes
- Include an adult dental benefit in publicly funded health coverage
- Improve the public perception of oral health, creating a more actional policy environment to advance all OPEN goals
With over 2,200 members nationwide and growing, OPEN and OPEN, Inc. are changing systems by engaging many stakeholders with diverse perspectives to develop the appropriate strategies to create change. OPEN has taken a network building approach to changing the oral health system by engaging health equity advocates, community-based organizations, providers, clinicians, policy makers, and health justice organizers to build alignment and coordinate efforts toward realizing a shared vision, as well as achieving articulated goals and targets. From our grassroots to our tops, we are seeing increasing awareness of the importance of understanding the social determinants of health, a reduction in dental disease in children, integration of oral health in overall health care, and policies that equitably ensure health coverage.
