Public Health Workforce Development and Training

NNPHI’s National Coordinating Center for Public Health Training (NCCPHT) is advancing capacity building, increased competency and performance improvement of the nation’s current and future public health workforce.

The National Coordinating Center for Public Health Training (NCCPHT) designs, delivers, and scales evidence-informed training and capacity-building initiatives that address real-world challenges and priorities.  With deep expertise in public health systems and infrastructure, NCCPHT leads efforts that promote health equity, advance performance improvement, and enhance cross-sector collaboration through high quality training, positioning NCCPHT as a responsive and reliable anchor in the evolving public health landscape.

NCCPHT utilizes a hub-and-spoke model, with NCCPHT as the central hub providing infrastructure, subject matter expertise, and communication platforms to support a network of partners (the spokes), including public health institutes, regional training centers, and other implementation partners.  This approach enables us to rapidly efficiently deploy training and technical assistance, promote consistency across jurisdictions, and scale innovative practices nationally while remaining responsive to local context.

Competency development toggle

NCCPHT designs and manages training programs that align with nationally recognized public health competencies.  Our offerings include asynchronous courses, structured learning pathways through the Public Health Learning Navigator, and interactive series such as the Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) for Public Health programs.  These trainings are tailored to meet the evolving needs of all public health professionals across various disciplines. We collaborate with subject matter experts and partner organizations to ensure content relevance and effectiveness.

Capacity building toggle

NCCPHT facilitates the development of sustainable public health systems by supporting the infrastructure and workforce of health departments and related organizations. We provide technical assistance, strategic planning, and program design support to enhance organizational capabilities. Our approach includes fostering peer learning networks and communities of practice that promote knowledge exchange and collaboration among public health professionals.

Performance improvement toggle

NCCPHT supports performance improvement by equipping the public health workforce with the knowledge, tools, and strategies needed to drive measurable progress across programs and systems. Our team integrates performance improvement principles into training and technical assistance efforts, helping organizations strengthen their quality improvement practices, implement performance management frameworks, and align efforts with national standards such as PHAB accreditation. Through initiatives like the Public Health Improvement Training program, we help health departments assess organizational capacity, develop improvement plans, and build internal systems to monitor progress and demonstrate impact. NCCPHT also fosters peer learning environments like communities of practice and national convenings that allow practitioners to share effective practices, troubleshoot challenges, and advance a culture of continuous improvement.
