Program Associate, Health and Racial Equity


The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) is an active network comprised of over 40 member public health institutes in 33 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Public health institutes are nonprofit organizations that improve the public’s health by fostering innovation, leveraging resources, and building partnerships across sectors, including government agencies, communities, the health care delivery system, media, and academia. NNPHI and its member institutes work together to implement public health policy and program initiatives throughout all 50 states. NNPHI offices are located in New Orleans and Washington, DC. Additional staff, consultants, members, and partners support NNPHI’s mission from several locations throughout the United States.

The NNPHI mission is to support national public health system initiatives and strengthen public health institutes to promote multi-sector activities resulting in measurable improvements of public health structures, systems, and outcomes. NNPHI’s vision is innovation-fostering public health institutes across the nation collaborating to improve population health.

NNPHI collaborates with its member public health institutes and a wide range of national, state, tribal and local partners to support public health initiatives. These collaborative efforts promote health equity, support public health and health systems collaboration, build capacity of the public health system, encourage health in all policies, and promote evidence-based public health practice. Position Summary:

At NNPHI, we recognize that a key element to population health improvement is ensuring and sustaining a diverse public health workforce that is reflective of all communities being served. NNPHI’s Health and Racial Equity (HRE) portfolio supports best practice to ensure the public health workforce’s ability to address the root causes of health inequities, including systemic oppression and racism. Workforce training and technical assistance support for organizational justice, equity, diversity and inclusion is necessary to ensure a public health workforce is equipped to address these structural factors.

The Program Associate will collaborate with the NNPHI team to support research, planning and implementation of projects and activities that advance NNPHI’s mission.

NNPHI maintains two physical offices in, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, Louisiana. We also offer Atlanta-based applicants the option to work remotely. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position will commence remotely. Ultimately, NNPHI requires the position will be based in either of our three locations. Therefore, applicants should indicate their preference to work in NNPHI offices located in New Orleans, Atlanta, or Washington, DC.   We will also consider applicants based outside of these locations, but preference is given to the listed locations.

Primary Responsibilities:

The Program Associate will work independently and collaboratively with staff serving on multiple teams throughout NNPHI and actively support collaboration across NNPHI, our members, consultants, contractors, and partners. The Program Associate will work closely with programmatic staff to support all activities associated with the Health and Racial Equity portfolio. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Contribute to effective planning and implementation of in-person meetings, webinars, trainings, and other events, which may involve scheduling, planning and facilitation.
  • Perform writing and editing tasks, including taking accurate notes of meetings, composing correspondence, proofing and laying out documents, and assisting with the publication process.
  • Support NNPHI/HRE project management staff.
  • Responding to emails and answering calls.
  • Maintaining office calendars.

Programmatic Support

  • Develop and update project timelines and work plans.
  • Collaborate with NNPHI teams to develop and oversee project work plans.
  • Support data collection and data management activities.
  • Support communications (e.g., newsletters) with key stakeholders.
  • Update and maintain online systems for tracking submissions and technical assistance requests.
  • Respond to requests for assistance via email or phone.
  • Contribute to the development of systems to support proposal processes.


The Program Associate position requires Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of professional experience required, Master’s degree in relevant field preferred.

  • Have a strong interest in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI)
  • Understanding of and interest in public health and health and racial equity principles, values and concepts
  • Can take initiative and work independently as well as part of a team
  • Customer service oriented
  • Competency and experience in the use of relevant software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and can quickly learning and utilizing multiple software and online programs (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox, Smartsheet, Salesforce, Mail Chimp, Canva, Zoom)
  • Experience providing administrative and coordination support for programs with a proven ability to effectively manage multiple assignments simultaneously including setting and meeting deadlines
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills necessary to effectively work with colleagues, partner organizations


Salary range of $45,000- $55,000, dependent on education and experience. NNPHI offers a highly competitive benefits package, including medical/dental/ vision/FSA/ parking/transportation, generous retirement contributions and annual leave.


10% travel is required based on location. This could be more or less based on the needs and responsibilities of the role.
