What to expect when connecting with public health institutes

Public health institutes (PHIs) are constantly adapting to the current environment, developing new capacities and bringing on subject matter experts to address the latest challenges. NNPHI continuously monitors the capacities of the institutes to support funders and partners in connecting with the most advanced capacity in the network. For example, in 2009 NNPHI was approached by Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to support capacity building to conduct Health Impact Assessments (HIAs). Through NNPHI’s knowledge of the network, the Oregon Public Health Insitute and Georgia Health Policy Center were identified as early adopters of the HIA process. Oregon and Georgia trained 10 public health institutes to conduct HIAs and provided ongoing technical assistance for active HIA processes in several states.

Additionally, Pew Charitable Trusts became aware of NNPHI’s extensive convenings expertise and together Pew and NNPHI hosted three National HIA Meetings for the field. Over three hundred practitioners attended each of these meetings and Pew’s investment lead to rapid adoption and institutionalization of HIA practice in state and local health departments, with PHIs as partners. This work was leveraged by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support technical assistance to federal agencies to utilize Health Impact Assessment as a tool for implementing the National Prevention Strategy. PHIs provided technical assistance to three federal agencies, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Office of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Transportation, to complete HIAs. This work was featured in the 2014 Annual Status Report to Congress.
