Strengthening Montana’s Public Health System

The Montana Public Health Institute (MTPHI) works to build a cohesive, responsive, and informed public health system that improves the health and quality of life of all Montanans. MTPHI’s staff live and work across the state, serving local and tribal public health departments and the communities they serve using a three-pronged approach: creating communities of practice, providing high quality technical assistance and tools, and building systems and funding streams.

Redesigning local mental health crisis systems

MTPHI provides communities of practice, technical assistance, and systems support to 32 communities that are re-imagining how to provide help to those in need. Through ongoing work to prevent opioid overdoses, MTPHI worked with state health officials to create a statewide network of local and tribal health departments and community health centers that serve as hubs for resources and training related to overdose prevention.

Founded in 2020, MTPHI’s maturation into a reliable and responsive statewide partner has happened during a period of trauma, recovery, and emerging transformation for our public health system. MTPHI provides stability and partnership to local and tribal health departments, state agencies, and communities working to address Montana’s most pressing and complex health challenges. During a time of challenges and uncertainty, MTPHI listened carefully to partners and shaped our priorities and approaches accordingly. We learned a lot. And as a result, we have designed our current and future work around a three-pronged approach that includes:

  • Communities of Practice
  • Technical Assistance & Tools
  • Systems and Funding

Each of these modes of practice runs like a ribbon through MTPHI’s initiatives and projects. MTPHI sees each as a key ingredient for strengthening the Montana public health system and as a road map to guide our future work.
