Position Summary:

The Lead Clinical Data Scientist at LPHI leads and supports health services research, public health research and surveillance, and evaluation projects. A significant part of this role is leading analytics for REACHnet, a Clinical Research Network (CRN) containing electronic health record data from multiple partner health systems in Louisiana, Texas, and California. REACHnet facilitates patient-centered, pragmatic research through a network infrastructure comprising informatics, health information technology, governance, and stakeholder engagement. The Lead Clinical Data Scientist is responsible for leading an analyst team and managing query, analytics, and data services for research and surveillance projects. This requires supervision of analysts’ tasks and progress including but not limited to advising on and reviewing analytic code, output, and visualizations. The Lead Clinical Data Scientist works closely with the Data Quality lead and Associate Director of Informatics to ensure clinical data compliance with quality standards and to determine methods for extracting, loading, and transforming clinical data from native EHRs into the PCORnet Common Data Model. The Lead Clinical Data Scientist position provides the opportunity to apply a variety of quantitative, analytical, and research management skills to lead or support research and public health surveillance activities and data infrastructure. The Lead Clinical Data Scientist participates in internal project leadership meetings and in multisite projects, contributing to process improvement, advancement of clinical data science, and development of research and surveillance projects using data assets. The Lead Clinical Data Scientist may collaborate as co-investigator on proposals or pursue opportunities to lead projects in line with their own interests. The position requires frequent collaboration with local and national partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in epidemiology, informatics, statistics, or health services research
  • 5+ years of research experience in the public health sector, healthcare, policy research organization, or academia
  • Proficiency using statistical software, specifically Stata, SAS, and/or SQL, and relational database management systems
  • Experience analyzing electronic health record and/or claims data
  • Ability to work in the New Orleans area preferred

Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead projects leveraging clinical data

  • Lead and/or support research projects and public health surveillance initiatives, serving in Investigator role or data/analytics lead on the project
  • Collaborate with LPHI staff and local and national partners in the conduct of research and surveillance projects leveraging clinical data, including COVID response projects, state and national chronic disease surveillance, health services research, and projects connecting clinical and social data (e.g., criminal justice data)
  • Co-develop analytical intellectual property to facilitate health research and population health (e.g., computable phenotypes)
  • Identify causes and solutions for data quality issues
  • Design and develop metrics for research projects and operations needs
  • Present data in visualizations and other formats that are understandable by non-technical audiences and/or appropriately tailored for specific audiences
  • Lead and contribute to dissemination products; write and contribute to briefs, manuscripts, and website content, and deliver presentations at conferences and meetings in field(s) of expertise

Provide data and analytic expertise

  • Serve as internal expert on data availability, capabilities, and data limitations
  • Provide expertise in clinical data analysis for LPHI staff and partners to support research, public health surveillance, and informatics projects and development opportunities
  • Use advanced analytic techniques and predictive modeling to produce results that contribute to population health and/or inform programmatic goals
  • Work with national partners to improve data processes, advance data science and use cases for the clinical data infrastructure
  • Write and execute analytic queries on the CDM using SAS and/or SQL to identify patient cohorts and extract datasets from relational database management systems
  • Provide ad hoc analytical support across the health services research and evaluation portfolios

Lead analyst team

  • Supervise a team of Analyst(s)/Senior Analyst(s), provide individual guidance, and teambuilding
  • Ensure the quality of deliverables for analyst team
  • Support research and analytic capacity building among analysts via direct mentorship and training as well as external training opportunities
  • Advise analysts on quantitative methods, analysis plans, troubleshooting analytical or data quality issues, and presentation/interpretation of results

Grant, proposal, and partnership development

  • Initiate and or support development of proposals and applications for funding opportunities in research, surveillance, and infrastructural enhancement projects
  • Develop national, regional and community partnerships with public health entities, academic institutions, healthcare delivery systems, community interest groups and stakeholders to further LPHI’s mission and business development
  • Manage relationships with external partners and cultivate new partnerships to expand research portfolio

Oversee analytics for data services

  • Manage query services for the REACHnet analyst team (e.g., review requests, assign analyst, review results)
  • Manage and support data services contracts
  • Participate in development, providing budgetary needs and scopes of work for analytic aspects of projects
  • Work with LPHI staff and partners to implement new and existing products, technologies, and/or architectures to solve, design, or develop solutions needed to make operational enhancements
