Intern, National Coordinating Center for Public Health Training

Overview:

The National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI) is an active network comprised of over forty-member public health institutes located throughout all ten Health and Human Services regions. NNPHI also serves as the National Coordinating Center for Public Health Training (NCCPHT) and hosts an affiliate network of ten Regional Public Health Training Centers (Regional PHTCs) serving all fifty states and US territories. Public health institutes (PHIs) are nonprofit organizations that improve the public’s health by fostering innovation, leveraging resources, and building partnerships across sectors, including government agencies, communities, the health care delivery system, media, and academia. NNPHI and its member institutes work together to implement public health policy and program initiatives throughout the nation. NNPHI offices are located in New Orleans and Washington, DC.   

The NNPHI mission is to support national public health system initiatives and strengthen public health institutes to promote multi-sector activities resulting in measurable improvements of public health structures, systems, and outcomes. NNPHI’s vision is innovation-fostering public health institutes across the nation collaborating to improve population health.   

NNPHI collaborates with its member public health institutes and a wide range of national, state, tribal, and local partners to support public health initiatives. These collaborative efforts promote health equity, support public health and health systems collaboration, build the capacity of the public health system, encourage health in all policies, and promote evidence-based public health practice. Position Summary:

The NCCPHT is seeking a summer intern to assist with the communications and training initiatives related to various public health focused projects within the NCCPHT portfolio, including but not limited to: 

The selected candidate will gain direct experience with public health communications and training, have the opportunity to engage with public health professionals across the country, and benefit from the mentorship of NNPHI colleagues. The intern position will commence in May 2023, with a flexible end date.  

Primary Responsibilities:

Communications:  

  • Creating newsletters and related marketing materials as assigned to amplify messaging across multiple platforms 
  • Creating and disseminating regular email marketing communications through MailChimp and Higher Logic Communities of Practice, as appropriate 
  • Developing discussion posts and other communications messaging for several online communities of practice 
  • Developing toolkits with communications collateral for partners to promote shared work 
  • Working with the NCCPHT team to implement strategic communications goals and develop mini-communications plans for various projects 
  • Creating and editing basic graphics, reports, and videos 
  • Supporting data entry and management 
  • Participating in project meetings, including setting agendas, taking notes, and following up on action items, as appropriate 

Training:  

  • Support Public Health Learning Navigator review processes and pathway development. 
  • Reviewing trainings for the Public Health Learning Navigator using the peer-review process for quality assurance 
  • Supporting the analysis of Project ECHO evaluation data, including developing data visualizations, maps, and other graphics, and using data to draw conclusions and tell stories 
  • Managing data entry for Project ECHO into Salesforce and other database systems 
  • Providing background research and copyediting support for reports and other publications 
  • Participating in project meetings, including setting agendas, taking notes, and following up on action items, as appropriate 

Qualifications:

Students early in their careers seeking experience in public health communications and training experience are encouraged to apply, including undergraduate and graduate students. 

  • Interest in learning about public health communications and training;  
  • Comfort with learning new digital platforms and tools; 
  • Experience with social media marketing (beneficial but not required); 
  • Experience with Salesforce or other CRM platforms (beneficial but not required);  
  • Independent work ethic and positive, self-starter attitude;  
  • Professionalism in communications and active listening skills; and  
  • Attention to detail and a strong value for high-quality work products. 

Job Location:

NNPHI maintains two physical offices in, Washington, DC, and New Orleans, Louisiana. We also offer Atlanta-based applicants the option to work remotely. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this position will commence remotely. Ultimately, NNPHI requires the position will be based in either of our three locations. Therefore, applicants should indicate their preference to work in NNPHI offices located in New Orleans, Atlanta, or Washington, DC. We will also consider applicants based outside of these locations, but preference is given to the listed locations.

Salary/Benefits:

The student intern will be paid $12-15 per hour depending on qualifications. The candidate will be expected to work up to 15-20 hours per week. This position will be primarily virtual, but candidates must reside in either the New Orleans, LA or Washington, DC metro regions.
