Membership Pathways

  • Category A Public health institutes
  • Category B Provisional or developmental public health institute
  • Category C Affiliate

Membership in Category A requires that those organizations align with the definition of a public health institute, are a nonprofit organization, are independent from government or universities on policy and programmatic decisions along with other organizational infrastructure requirements outlined in the membership application. Category B membership is comprised of those organizations that seek NNPHI membership in category A but do not yet meet all of the above criteria.  Category C are those organizations that subscribe to the NNPHI mission and vision and desire to have a formal affiliation with the network but are not interested in becoming full Category A members.

Membership application process for Category A toggle
  1. Multiple discussions with NNPHI to determine the organization’s alignment with the definition of a public health institute and the mission of the network.
  2. If the organization is a good match for membership, they must complete the membership application.
  3. All applications for membership are reviewed by the NNPHI Membership Committee, a sub-committee of the Board comprised of Category A members. The Membership Committee reviews the application and provides a recommendation to the Board. The committee may also ask for additional information or conversation with the organization.
  4. The Board reviews the recommendation from the Membership Committee and votes on the application. A quorum of the Board is required for the vote. If the application is accepted, NNPHI welcomes the new member to the network and connects the new members to member benefits.
When should membership discussions begin? toggle

NNPHI invites conversations with organizations at any phase of their development to learn about membership and explore alignment with the network. Nonprofits that are growing are especially encouraged to reach out if they are interested in developing as a full public health institute; NNPHI can provide technical assistance to support the organization with reaching the appropriate developmental milestones. Existing nonprofits with a long history are also encouraged to reach out to discuss if their organization is a match for the network. Organizations that are in a state with an existing NNPHI member will be encouraged to meet with that member and discuss opportunities for collaboration.
