Institutes in Action: Health in All Policies

As independent non-profit agencies, public health institutes (PHIs) are uniquely situated to provide non-biased analysis and engage multiple stakeholders in discussion and action. NNPHI is pleased to showcase several examples of member institutes engaging in vital efforts to advance sound public health policy:

Georgia Health Policy Center

Housed within Georgia State University's Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, the Georgia Health Policy Center (GHPC) provides evidence-based research, program development, and policy guidance.  GHPC and NNPHI have worked together to incorporate health policies into community design and redevelopment of Atlanta’s Ft.McPherson, a military base scheduled for closure in 2011.  By incorporating health into policy development in all sectors—from land use to education—the collaboration is addressing the key determinants of health systematically and holistically.  To learn more, see Fort McPherson Interim Zoning Health Impact Assessment.

Health Policy Institute of Ohio

The Health Policy Institute of Ohio (HPIO) provides state policymakers with the independent information and analysis they need to create informed health policy.  Since its founding in 2003, HPIO serves as Ohio’s nonpartisan, independent source for forecasting health trends, analyzing key health issues, and communicating current research to policymakers, state agencies, and other policymakers. Public Health Institute (CA)

California's Public Health Institute (PHI) promotes quality of life for people throughout California, across the country, and around the world.  PHI utilizes its staff's ample data collection and evaluation skills to inform policymakers. PHI's Adolescent Sexual Health Policy Project focuses on achieving: (1) better-informed policymakers in regards to adolescent health; (2) improved quality of debate and media reporting on these issues; and (3) improved quality of research and evaluation related to these issues.  To learn more, see “Sound Policies Send California's Teen Pregnancy Rates Plummeting”.
