Career Epidemiology Field Officer Opportunities

Major Duties and Responsibilities
The Career Epidemiology Field Officer (CEFO) Program places experienced epidemiologists in state and local health departments across the country to serve them in developing their capabilities in disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, epidemiologic studies, and public health practice, including preparedness and response activities related to terrorism and other public health emergencies.
CEFO activities may include:
• Strengthen state and local surveillance systems
• Conduct outbreak investigations and response
• Develop response plans for major public health emergencies
• Build partnerships with governmental agencies and other organizations for emergency preparedness
• Serve as a liaison to CDC and DHHS response teams and other resources
• Lead portions of the state’s planning and response activities for pandemic influenza
• Lead or participate in state or local emergency response exercises
• Provide expertise on the design of epidemiologic investigations, conduct studies as appropriate, analyze data, and publish findings.
Desired Experience and Training
CEFOs have completed CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service training program or comparable training. CEFOs also have public health work experience in epidemiology (disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, epidemiologic studies), preparedness (planning and response), and development of evidence-based policy and guidance. CEFOs have a broad spectrum of professional backgrounds (MD, DVM, PhD, MPH, RN), skill sets, and experience levels to serve in positions that meet the needs of the health department. CEFOs are recruited at the Commissioned Officer rank of O3 to O6 or the Civil Service GS-13 or GS-14 level.
