Vice President, Global Health Programs
The Public Health Institute (PHI) in Oakland, California is seeking a Vice President for Global Health who is a public health leader with the capacity, connections, and experience to direct the Global Health programs at PHI. PHI is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting health, well-being and quality of life for people throughout California, across the nation and around the world. As one of the largest and most comprehensive public health organizations in the nation, PHI is at the forefront of research and innovation to improve the efficacy of public health statewide, nationally and internationally.
PHI has a 44 year history of conducting domestic and international programs and has an annual budget exceeding $85 million and growing.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Vice President (VP) of Global Health at PHI will report directly to the President/CEO and participate as part of PHI’s senior management team. The VP of Global Health will play a lead role in developing a vision and five-year strategic plan to expand PHI’s global health portfolio. The successful candidate will collaborate with PHI’s President/CEO, program directors leading global health programs including the Global Health Fellows Program, and partners/ consultants to promote synergistic approaches to our activities and to grow the global health programs at PHI. This entails developing institutional capacity in new markets by building and maintaining relationships with NIH, CDC, USAID, bi- and multilateral donors, foundations, NGOs, corporations and other partners that lead to increased opportunities to meet these strategic goals.
This candidate will serve as the liaison between global health programs and central administration to coordinate operational issues. This person will identify new funding and partnership opportunities and will help recruit new Program Directors and Principal Investigators in global health. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills and will represent PHI at national and international conferences and other relevant meetings.
Qualifications:

This position requires an individual with a deep passion for and understanding of global health issues and the need for strategic and effective solutions. VP of Global Health Programs’ qualifications include:
- Master’s degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Business or related field required; MD, DrPH, or PhD preferred
- Minimum 10 years experience leading and managing international programs, staff, and cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated experience growing financial portfolios, establishing partnerships with diverse funders, and generating new funding streams
- Demonstrated experience developing opportunities with USAID and other federal funders
- Extensive personal and professional experience and networks in the field of Global Health
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships with staff, donors, partners, and government leaders at all levels
- Demonstrated ability to employ and model diplomacy with leaders and funders in the US and globally
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- History of creating shared vision and leading staff to realize that vision
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse client groups and executives
- Strong commitment to collaboration and team management approach
- Experience working in developing countries
- Fluency in a language in addition to English is highly desired
Compensation:
This is an exempt position and the salary is commensurate with experience.
